The site was discovered in 2019 during a student training excavation on a low mound on the valley floor. Flint flakes and a partially polished stone axe dating back perhaps some 5000 years were located in a series of shallow trenches excavated across the site. This spring we are intending to return to the site to hopefully discover more finds and evidence for what inhabitants were doing in the area. Work will also be undertaken to unravel the history of changing vegetation of this landscape throughout later prehistoric and historic times. Surrounding the mound are peat filled hollows that are likely to contain pollen grains that will enable us to reconstruct this vegetation and to examine the history of farming in the area.

The discovery of the Talsarn site is exciting. Such sites, in this part of the world, are rare and have seldom been excavated using modern archaeological techniques. While we are not sure of the purpose of the site, we know, from the very well preserved nature of the artefacts, that people were importing raw materials or tools from distant sources. Axes may have been used here for timber collection, along with tools for hunting or wildfowling. It also means that the site and its surrounding area were connected to places, people and practices from across Britain and Ireland. Perhaps this year we may find more extensive evidence for what they were doing?

If you want to be part of this story exploring Ceredigion’s early history then please join us in the field during April and May. We are looking for volunteers to participate Monday to Friday from 24th April to 5th May and on a Friday only from 12th to 26th May. You will be taught the basics of archaeological excavation, including how to survey, record and investigate your landscapes. You will also have the opportunity to participate in artefact recovery and processing, and may even identify another polished axe!

This work is part of a €1.95 million project called Portalis, a cross-border, transdisciplinary pilot project that explores the earliest connections between Ireland and Wales. The funding for the project comes from the European Regional Development Fund, through the Ireland Wales Cooperation programme. The project is led by Waterford Institute of Technology and is supported by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Ceredigion County Council and Waterford Chamber of Trade.

Beth: Archebwch le ac ymunwch â ni yn y maes ar gloddfa archeolegol, gan gynnwys sut i gynnal arolwg o’ch tirweddau a’u hymchwilio, a sut i gofnodi’r wybodaeth.

Ble: Byddwn yn cwrdd yn PCYDDS, ym Maes Parcio Neuadd y Celfyddydau, Llanbedr Pont Steffan, i gael ein cludo i’r safle.

Pwy:Yn agored i unrhyw un 16 oed a throsodd. Sylwer, os gwelwch yn dda: Oherwydd dibenion Iechyd a Diogelwch, efallai y gofynnir i chi ddarparu gwybodaeth adnabod (‘ID’).

Pryd: Dydd Llun i ddydd Gwener o’r 24ain o Ebrill i’r 5ed o Fai ac ar ddydd Gwener yn unig o’r 12ed i’r 26ain o Fai: 9 – 4 o’r gloch.

Yr hyn y dylech ddod gyda chi: Cofiwch y byddwch yn gweithio mewn cae yng Ngorllewin Cymru, felly gofalwch fod gennych ddillad sy’n addas ar gyfer tywydd poeth ac oer/gwlyb. Darganfuwyd y safle yn 2019 yn ystod cloddiad hyfforddi myfyrwyr ar dwmpath isel ar lawr y dyffryn.
